Blocking and Bracing Cargo in Shipping Containers
Your cargo is loaded in a container heading overseas. If it shifts, slides, tips, or rolls on a rough crossing, it arrives damaged. How do you lock it in place? Blocking and bracing, the wooden blocks, straps, and bracing materials that secure cargo so it cannot move, are what keep the load intact from origin to destination.
Blocking and bracing uses those materials to create a snug fit inside the container and eliminate any space where cargo might slide, tip, or roll. Done right, it cuts the risk of damage, meets safety regulations, and keeps the goods arriving in the condition they left in.

The cargo in these photos is seamless pipe bound for an oil and gas company in India, bundled, sledded, and braced in a 20-foot shipping container. That is what proper blocking and bracing looks like.
Export Crating and Containerization
Texas International Freight is an export crater that containerizes cargo, blocks and braces it, sells shipping containers, and ships those containers worldwide from customer locations across the interior United States. If you have questions on the cost of containerizing cargo, call us, and in most cases we quote you within the day.
Containers We Sell
We sell 40-foot containers, 40-foot high-cube containers, and 20-foot containers, both new and used. All are ISO certified for ocean transport and seaworthy. We deliver to your door or to your supplier’s door for loading.
Smaller and Oversized Cargo
For smaller loads, LCL shipping is a strong option, and we move it from any point in the U.S. to your customer’s door almost anywhere. LCL cargo rides on heat-treated skids and pallets that meet the ISPM 15 standard for wood packaging, and we supply them. For cargo too big for a standard container, we lash and secure loads to flat rack containers and top-load out-of-gauge pieces into Open Top containers. When the cargo is larger or heavier still, we ship it on wooden saddles or heavy-duty skids and protect it with shrink wrap or waterproof foil.
Working With Texas International Freight
From a single braced container to a full project load, we handle the crating, the containerization, and the ocean move on one desk. Tell us the cargo, the dimensions, and the destination, and we return a plan and a quote, usually the same day.

What is blocking and bracing in shipping containers?
The methods and materials used to secure cargo inside a container so it cannot move in transit, which protects the safety and integrity of the goods.
Why is blocking and bracing important?
It stops cargo from shifting, tipping, or rolling, the main causes of transit damage, and it keeps the load compliant with safety regulations.
What materials are used for blocking and bracing?
Wooden blocks, strapping, airbags, and foam padding are the common ones. The choice depends on the nature of the cargo and the shipping requirements.
Do different containers need different bracing?
Yes. An open-top, a flat rack, and a refrigerated container each call for their own bracing approach based on how the cargo loads and sits.
What should you do after blocking and bracing is complete?
Inspect the setup to confirm it follows the guidelines, then photograph it for your records and any potential insurance claim.
