What Is a Terminal Handling Charge (THC)?

A terminal handling charge, or THC, is a fee the port terminal charges for moving and handling cargo within the terminal, separate from the ocean freight. It covers the loading or unloading of containers between the vessel and the yard, the lifts, and the storage and movement on the dock. THC applies at both the origin port and the destination port, and the rate is set by the terminal and the local market.

THC is one of the charges that sit on top of the base ocean rate, so it belongs in any full landed-cost estimate. Texas International Freight breaks out terminal and handling charges on your ocean freight so the shipping cost holds no surprises.
