What Is an ATA Carnet?

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that lets goods enter a foreign country temporarily without paying import duty or tax, as long as they leave again unchanged. It works as a passport for cargo, recognized across a large network of countries. Common uses include equipment for trade shows, professional gear, and machinery sent abroad for demonstration, testing, or a short-term job.

For heavy equipment moving out and back, a carnet can replace temporary import bonds and speed clearance at both ends. The goods must return within the carnet’s validity, usually one year. Texas International Freight arranges carnet shipments and coordinates the customs clearance that goes with them.
