What Does EXW (Ex Works) Mean?

EXW, or Ex Works, is the Incoterm that places the most responsibility on the buyer. The seller simply makes the goods available at its own premises, a factory or warehouse, and does nothing more. From that point the buyer arranges and pays for loading, export clearance, main carriage, insurance, import clearance, and final delivery, and carries the risk the whole way.

EXW gives the buyer full control of the routing, which experienced importers with a capable forwarder often want. It also means the buyer must manage export formalities in the seller’s country, so a strong agent matters. Texas International Freight acts as that agent, handling pickup and export on EXW moves and explaining the shipping terms.
