Industrial Generator and Genset Shipping From Houston to Worldwide Sites
Industrial generators rarely fit a standard freight plan. A 500 kW unit may slide into a container, while a 100,000 lb genset needs a permitted heavy haul trailer. Generator shipping needs the right trailer, the right vessel space and the right paperwork from the first quote.

Texas International Freight moves diesel, natural gas and standby power units for the construction, mining, oil and gas and energy sectors. Which piece of your power package is the hardest to move: the genset, the fuel tank or the switchgear?
Real Generator Moves Our Team Has Quoted
Recent requests show how wide the range is. One buyer purchased two Kohler industrial generators, rated 1,000 kW and 500 kW, in Texas for export to Venezuela. Another shipper needed a 100,219 lb genset, about 503 x 136 inches, moved with a matching fuel tank from Lerma, Mexico to Houston.
Other files included diesel generators that needed RGN or lowboy trailers with escorts, a pole car and state permits. A generator stator skid traveled by barge from La Porte, Texas to Key West. A client importing a 350 kW gas-fired generator set asked for customs clearance help at the border.
Container, Flat Rack or Breakbulk for Your Genset
Size and weight decide the ocean mode. Send your forwarder the length, width, height, gross weight and lifting points before anything else.
Standard containers
Smaller skid-mounted or enclosed units can load into a 20 ft or 40 ft container. Blocking, bracing and lashing keep the unit from shifting at sea. Your cargo stays sealed from the loading dock to the destination terminal.
Flat racks and open tops
Units that are too tall or too wide for a box door move on flat racks. Crane loading from above suits open tops. Read our comparison of flat rack vs open top containers to see which fits your genset.
Breakbulk and project cargo
Large containerized gensets, stator skids and multi-piece power plants often go breakbulk. The ship lifts each piece with its own gear or the port crane. Cold-climate units add their own packing steps, covered on our arctic generator shipping page.
Inland Haul on Lowboy and RGN Trailers
Most heavy gensets reach the port on a lowboy or a removable gooseneck trailer. A low deck keeps the overall height down, so you avoid bridge and power line conflicts. Learn how a detachable front lets the unit roll or skid on with our guide to what an RGN trailer is, then see our lowboy trailer shipping service.
Our heavy haul trucking team plans the route, the axle spread and the load securement. For coastal moves, a barge can beat the highway. The La Porte stator skid shows why: our barge services move outsized pieces along the Gulf Coast and the Intracoastal Waterway.
Texas Oversize Permits and Escorts
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) issues oversize and overweight permits. A load needs a permit once it exceeds the legal limits of 8 feet 6 inches wide, 14 feet high or 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight.
- Over 14 feet wide: one front escort on two-lane highways.
- Over 16 feet wide: front and rear escorts on all roads.
- Over 17 feet high: a front escort with a height pole, the pole car, or front and rear escorts.
Plan the permit before you book the vessel so the cargo meets its cutoff.
Fuel, Batteries and Dangerous Goods Rules
A diesel genset is machinery with an engine. Ocean carriers check it against the IMDG Code. The code lists engines and machinery under UN 3528 when powered by flammable liquid fuel, UN 3529 when powered by flammable gas and UN 3530 when the fuel is a marine pollutant.
Under IMDG guidance, an engine or machine counts as empty of liquid fuel when the tank has been drained and the unit cannot run for lack of fuel. Drain the main tank and any separate fuel tank before delivery to the terminal. Disconnect or protect the batteries from short circuit. Ask your carrier for its own policy in writing, since some lines add stricter rules than the code. PHMSA rules in 49 CFR apply to the domestic truck and rail legs.
Export Documents and Cross-Border Moves
You must file Electronic Export Information (EEI) in the Automated Export System (AES) when a shipment is valued over $2,500 per Schedule B number, or when it needs an export license at any value. Shipments to Canada are exempt from that value trigger unless a license or another mandatory rule applies.
Your file also needs a commercial invoice, a packing list and a bill of lading. Exports to Venezuela need screening against U.S. sanctions and export control rules before you sell or ship. See our notes on shipping to Venezuela for that lane.
Moves to and from Mexico run by truck through the Texas border crossings. A qualified and authorized Mexican customs broker files the import entry, called the pedimento. Our shipping to Mexico team coordinates both sides of the border for gensets, fuel tanks and switchgear.

Frequently Asked Questions About Generator Shipping
Can a diesel generator ship in a standard container?
Yes, when the unit fits through the door and stays under the container payload. A skid-mounted 500 kW standby unit for a construction site often loads into a 40 ft container with blocking and bracing. Larger enclosed gensets for mining camps or oil rigs usually need a flat rack or breakbulk space.
Do I have to drain the fuel before an ocean move?
Plan on it. Under the IMDG Code, machinery counts as empty of liquid fuel once the tank is drained and the engine cannot run. Oil and gas operators shipping rig power packs drain the day tank and any separate fuel tank, then protect the batteries before terminal delivery.
What trailer moves a 100,000 lb genset?
A multi-axle lowboy or RGN trailer with a TxDMV oversize and overweight permit. A genset of about 100,219 lb, like one we quoted from Lerma, Mexico to Houston, needs a route survey, escorts and axle weights checked before dispatch, the same planning used for heavy machinery and mining equipment.
Can you ship generators to Mexico and Canada?
Yes. We truck gensets, switchgear and fuel tanks across the Texas border into Mexico, with a Mexican customs broker filing the pedimento. Energy and agricultural equipment buyers in Canada can ship by truck or rail, and EEI filing for Canada depends on license and mandatory filing rules.
How do you move a generator stator or turbine part that is too big for the road?
We look at water first. A stator skid we quoted moved by barge from La Porte, Texas to Key West. Barges and breakbulk vessels carry oversized power plant parts, transformers and oil and gas modules that exceed highway clearances.
