Breakbulk is cargo that ships as separate pieces loaded individually rather than in containers, such as machinery, pipe, and project modules. Heavy lift is a subset of breakbulk defined by weight: single pieces so heavy they need special cranes, reinforced vessels, and engineered lifting plans, often hundreds of tons in one unit. Every heavy-lift move is breakbulk, but not every breakbulk piece is heavy lift.
The distinction drives the equipment. Standard breakbulk uses ship or shore cranes, while heavy lift calls for specialized geared vessels, floating cranes, or SPMT transport, with lift surveys and ballast planning. Texas International Freight handles both through its breakbulk and project logistics service.
