A Mafi trailer, also called a roll trailer, is a low, heavy-duty platform trailer used to move cargo on and off roll-on roll-off and multipurpose vessels. A terminal tractor couples to the trailer’s gooseneck and tows it up the ramp into the ship, where the loaded trailer is parked and lashed, or the cargo is lifted off and the trailer reused. The name comes from MAFI, the German maker that made the design standard.
Roll trailers carry machinery, project pieces, containers, and breakbulk that cannot drive aboard on its own wheels, bridging the gap between the quay and the vessel. Texas International Freight uses roll-trailer handling for RoRo and breakbulk moves of heavy equipment.
