How Do You Move a Factory?
Seven steps make the difference between a controlled move and an expensive one:
1. Choose an experienced packaging, crating, and shipping provider. A partner who has executed factory moves before saves time and money at every later step. Specialist capability in crating, blocking, and bracing should be the first thing you check.
2. Build the relocation strategy and timeline. Decide what goes where in the new plant, then sequence the disconnection, disassembly, crating, and transfer out of the old one, and the reverse order going in. Sequencing makes or breaks the move. Build a 20 percent time buffer into the schedule for the complications that always surface.
3. Make a thorough inventory list. Every item the crating and shipping company touches goes on a checklist. If a piece goes missing mid-move, the inventory finds it fast.
4. Settle the utilities early. Will power and water be off while equipment installs at the new site, or live when you take possession? Either way, lock those arrangements in as soon as the dates firm up.
5. Use your internal experts. The people who operate and service your machinery know how each unit should be prepared, drained, locked, and protected. Gather their input and act on it before the crates arrive.
6. Map the path every asset takes. Doors off hinges, passages widened, floors protected, and for the largest pieces, oversize permits for the public-road leg. Working these out in advance is what prevents the delays.
7. Execute and inspect. Move in one shot or in stages, then run the checklists again: every asset at the new site, in working order, signed off.
